The islands of the Caribbean are beautiful! Blue-ish green waters. Tropical ocean breezes. White sandy beeches. Who wouldn't want to honeymoon there? I have been able to visit a few places myself, including Antigua and Jamaica on medical mission trips. They are beautiful places and the people delightful.
But it seems like in recent years we hear more and more stories of hurricanes in the Caribbean. What a bummer it would be to plan your honeymoon for a beautiful island and then not even be able to go, or get there and only stay a couple of days before having to run for your lives.
And it does happen. I helped one couple with their wedding who had happen to them. What made it worse is that it also rained back home on their wedding day. I have to say though that they had a good attitude about it all and didn't let it upset them. Disappointed yes, but they kept things in perspective.
But what can you do to prevent this from happening to you? Well, you could go someone else where they don't have hurricanes. But if your heart is set on the Caribbean, you could choose some locations are less known for having hurricanes. Here are some islands are less prone to having hurricanes: Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire and Margarita.
Another thing you can look into are vacation planning companies that offer some kind of refund if there is a hurricane. I would suggest that you deal with only the best ones and that you read the fine print. The refund may be partial or only under certain circumstances. You want to know what those circumstances are. I have heard that some of these travel agencies may offer a replacement vacation. So you don't get your money back but you still get a vacation at a future date.
There are other deals to look for too, including low cost travel insurance, the waiving of cancellation fees or vouchers for credit to your account.
On a related note is the problem of scams offering free honeymoons. There are many legitimate offers like this where companies and wedding businesses are trying to promote their businesses. But there are so many scammers these days and this is an area that has been affected. You want to watch for the proverbial if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Mostly you have to watch out for anyone who requires you to buy something first or pay some fee up front. Run, don't walk away from those.
Chances are it will not happen to you, but it is better like with everything concerning your wedding to plan for all contingencies.
